Endurance Racing, the Clash and the Daytona 500

Speedweeks at Daytona

Daytona's winter racing is a sequence rather than a single weekend. The sports-car endurance classic opens the IMSA season; NASCAR's exhibition Clash leads into the Daytona 500. Reading each event separately makes the calendar clearer, whether the question is how a race ended or when the next announced edition is scheduled.

A Month, Not a Weekend

The winter racing calendar has more than one kind of contest. An exhibition can introduce the season without awarding championship points, while an endurance race measures the competition across an entire day. The Daytona 500 has its own result and its own place as NASCAR's season opener. Putting all three under the broad winter-racing heading should not blur those differences.

A useful calendar therefore carries both the event name and the year. A completed result explains what happened; an announced schedule explains what is intended to happen next. The 2026 results and the February 2027 dates below serve those separate purposes.

The Rolex 24 Opens the Year

The 2026 Rolex 24 was the event's 64th running. NBC Sports reported a third consecutive victory for Porsche Penske Motorsport, only the third team to achieve that sequence in the race's history. Porsche's manufacturer total reached a record 21 overall victories.

The race completed 705 laps on the 12-turn, 3.56-mile road course. Of its nine cautions, the longest was a race-record six hours and 33 minutes under yellow because of dense fog. Those two measures belong together: the lap total describes the distance completed, while the fog caution describes a substantial part of the elapsed racing day.

The winning entry led 375 of the 705 completed laps, and the margin at the finish was 1.569 seconds. These details add scale to the result: a day-long contest ended with a gap measured in seconds. The three-year team streak and Porsche's overall manufacturer total describe a longer span of results, beyond the finish of this particular race.

The 2026 Daytona 500

Tyler Reddick became the 44th different driver to win the Daytona 500, leading only the final lap. It was the first Daytona 500 victory for 23XI Racing. NBC Sports' results report recorded 25 leaders, a Daytona 500 record, and 65 lead changes.

The lead-change total was the second highest in the race's history, behind 74 in 2011. A record number of leaders therefore did not mean a record number of lead changes: one counts the different drivers who led, while the other counts changes at the front. Reddick's final-lap win adds a third measure, showing how little time the eventual winner needed to spend in the lead.

The Clash Comes Back to Daytona

The Clash is scheduled for February 13, 2027, with the Daytona 500 set for February 21. The Associated Press announcement carried by NBC Sports identifies the Clash as a non-points exhibition and the lead-up to the season opener.

Daytona hosted it from 1979 through 2021. Three years in Los Angeles and two at Bowman Gray Stadium followed. The announced return puts the exhibition back at Daytona, but its role remains distinct from the 500: a place on the same February calendar does not make the two races interchangeable.

Reading the Calendar Today

Start with the discipline, then the event, then the date. The Rolex 24 result belongs to sports-car endurance racing. The Clash announcement concerns an exhibition. The Daytona 500 result concerns the season-opening stock-car race. This order makes it easier to compare events without confusing a result from one year with a scheduled date in another.

Daytona's motorcycle rallies follow a separate calendar, covered on the Bike Week and Biketoberfest page. The winter racing dates above are specific to the named events; they should not be used as shorthand for every race or rally at the Speedway.
